從銅器時代開始，人們用來清洗身體的，大多不外是水和香藥草，或是用灰燼和動物油脂製成的肥皂。用橄欖油製成的堅硬肥皂，為穆斯林在中世紀所發明，然後透過摩爾人統治的西班牙傳入歐洲的。從此，肥皂一直被當作一種奢侈品，直到19世紀。
工業化後，肥皂低價製造成商業產品。在1851年的倫敦萬國博覽會現場，肥皂多得不得了，有的甚至帶有溫和的香味，在當時是一件非常迷人的新鮮玩意兒。令人擔心的是有些肥皂包含砷和鉛等化學漂白成分，可以把皮膚變成雪花石膏那種陰森的白色。

總統指出，以前擔心的事，這次來「比較不擔心」，希望下次來，不只是不擔心，而且是「有信心」。
